Featured in MacWorld, gMeter is an app that turns the iPhone and iPod Touch into a vehicle performance computer. By using the onboard accelerometer in these devices, gMeter can measure forward and lateral g forces and use this data to compute acceleration, velocity, distance traveled, and engine power. gMeter is setup to compute performance for timed distance (1/4 mile or 400 meter), timed speed (0-60 mph or 0-100 km/h), or timed braking (60-0 mph or 100-0 km/h), and offers a hands-free automatic start feature (based on vehicle motion). gMeter also offers a full manual mode.

gMeter can display data and compute performance in US or metric units, and data from performance runs can be saved and e-mailed right from the device. The software has two calibration modes, and offers a correction to account for vehicle pitch and roll under acceleration, deceleration, and cornering. Engine power computations include inputs for drivetrain loss, rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, and weather conditions.

NOTES AND DISCLAIMERS, PLUS AN ATTEMPT TO IDIOT-PROOF THE BUYING EXPERIENCE:

gMeter is simple enough to be used by anyone, but the app is intended for operation in a vehicle to measure things like 0-60, 1/4 mile, and braking. The app requires proper mounting and calibration in a vehicle for setup, in order to measure a vehicles forward and lateral acceleration components accurately. gMeter has been track tested and validated against dedicated measuring equipment, and has thousands of hours of successful measurement by developers and users since July 2008.

Please use gMeter safely. Users automatically agree to the gMeter End User License Agreement (EULA) when opening the app. Please review the EULA from within the app, using the link below, or from the apps support website.

If you have problems or issues with gMeter, please refer to the user manual and FAQ, accessible from within the app or on the gMeter website. For additional help, feedback, or to make a feature request, contact the developer using the support link below (were glad to help). Note that the developer cannot monitor and respond to review comments, so that is not a good way to get tech support or submit feedback if you want a resolution.

As noted above, gMeter is intended for properly calibrated and setup operation in a vehicle to measure things like 0-60, 1/4 mile, and braking (including metric equivalents). In that scenario, the combination of gMeter and the accelerometer in your iOS device can easily match or beat the accuracy of dedicated test equipment costing hundreds or thousands of dollars. If youre not using the app in that scenario, dont expect it to make valid measurements.

Over the years, users have posted idiotic reviews noting that gMeter does not work well on their sofa, toilet, bar stool, kitchen table, or when holding the app in their hands upside down and walking backwards while eating a jumbo burrito with all the fixings. If you want to join the exclusive club of morons who spend $8.99 on an automotive performance app but lack the brains to: 1) properly use it for its intended purpose, 2) read instructions, or 3) ask for help, iTunes will be glad to take your money. But wed much rather have good customers who purchase the app for proper vehicle measurements and will contact us when they need assistance. If you know cars and want to make serious performance measurements, gMeter will be the best $8.99 you ever spent, and we will back your purchase with the best customer support in the business.

Pros and cons of gMeter app for iPhone and iPad

gMeter app good for

Very cool application. When calibrated and used on level ground, accuracy is very good. The GUI is also very pretty, and matches the iPhone look and feel very well. Craig is a friendly and responsive developer. I cant wait for 1.1.
This is an app well done. This app is very accurate. And if not perfect in the first run there is the pitch angle adjustment to tweak the calibration to make it perfect. The graphs are beauty. If you are tuning your car and looking for those extra hps or shedding a tenth or two in the 1/4 then I highly recommend this app. It gives you the ability to dyno tune for the price of the app
It has a clean interface and its amazing how well this app actually works. If it had the horsepower reading it would be perfect. Please :-)
gMeter uses detailed input to get amazingly accurate results plus you can e-mail the results home to store, compare, and show off - Beats dyno fees for before-after mod comparisons!
I feel like I have to rate every app 5 stars just to balance out the little douchebags who complain about the price. Having said that, this really is a 5 star app! It is surprisingly accurate, and easy to learn. The support website is very helpful and informative. A+
I have had this ap for awhile now. Good app but can you please add landscape mode?

Some bad moments

Doesnt seem to work that well especially since I get negative speeds now and then. Maybe I am asking too much of this app but it is the most expensive app Ive bought so I expected better.
itunes please screen ur apps better, this really doesnt work at all and costs alot, some one is making alot of money of this app.Give us our money back!
This app simply does not work. If the iPhone tilts because of elevation change or because it isnt holstered immovably somewhere in the car, then none of the readings will work right. I get negative speeds regularly. Fraudulent! Worst app I have bought.
It did not work, is useless, with the movement of the car engine in ralentí you get speed readings, negativa readings.
Just to many things that will throw your accuracy off. To say its calborated correctly would take dozen or more passes on a drag strip, and your getting your time slips already. Bang for the buck, I just dont think the app works well enough for the price tag.
I got this app thinking it was a different app, When I figured out that it was not the same app, i figured I would give it a try, The screen shots look like this app is going to be a good one. Well it doesnt work. If you start driving within a mile the g-meter will say that you are traveling at a negative speed. I am not impressed with this app., Oh well I hope if you read this you find a different app.... Update... I started this app while it was sitting stationary on a table, I calibrated the g-meter and told it to start. It immediately started showing that it was accelerating and within a minute it was saying I was traveling at over 200 miles an hour, in less than 2 minutes it showed a speed of over 500 miles an hour.. If I wanted an app to show off the speed of my car, this is surely it.
